Life tips

We know that you're competing in what is, after all, a man's world of work. You feel that it might be inappropriate, even unprofessional, to draw attention to your femininity. Well, as the men would put it - bollocks! They knew you were a woman when they hired you and your feminine personality attributes are probably part of what makes you excel at your job. Looking great can only enhance your career prospects.

Every morning, repeat after us: 'I am a complete woman with a rich, rewarding life. I am good enough exactly as I am.' Doing this will make you totally cringe at first, but persevere. Stick this message on your mirror, on the fridge, in your car and just keep saying it until you believe it.

Take your break - every day. Get out of that office to walk or meditate in the park, read a book, window shop, go to a yoga class...anything that's not work! Lunch al-desko is no longer acceptable.

Wear something different every single day for a week. Vary your colours as well as your outfits. Count how many compliments you receive during that week.

Close the office door at six and leave your work there. Okay, you do have to work late sometimes but unless you're an A & E surgeon or a fire-fighter (and even they have lives too) there is no excuse for staying after hours every night.

Enrol in an evening class one night a week. Make sure that it's something completely frivolous and fun (ahem - advanced computer engineering is not allowed). This will also give you a rock-solid excuse for leaving work on time, at least once a week.

Make your work space into your own private world. Flowers and family photos on your desk will cheer up your day and remind you that you do have a wonderful life outside these walls.

Ditch the watch. It's the weekend - who cares what time it is? If you are wearing your watch in bed you need to see a therapist.

When? Relaxing at the weekend.

Why? You can't even think about work in these clothes.
