Remember
- Be noticed - you are a woman. Believe it or not, that may be one of your great assets and not a hindrance to your career at all. Don't be afraid to show your femininity.
- Spend some time finding out which colours suit you. Put all your clothes into colour piles: reds, blues, pinks, greens - even blacks and whites (include cream and ecru). In good daylight hold each item up to your face and see how it looks. Does it make you seem alive and sparkling, or does it bring out the inner corpse?
You will now know which are your basic good blues, reds, greens, whites, etc. Next learn how to combine these with complementary colours. A good shortcut is to look at the combinations in garments by designers who really understand colour, such as Missoni.
- Get a new hairstyle every six to nine months. It may feel like a risk, but your hair will always grow back.
- Black accessories are not the most useful. Look for muted browns, plums and greens which will work with most colours. You don't have to match your bag to your shoes
- Don't take your work home with you. Bring your home to work instead. Fill your office with personal touches, photographs and flowers, to make it into your own world.
- Put together a quick-change kit to keep at the office in case of last-minute social invitations.
- Beware of falling back into the duplication rut. Are you buying the same thing over and over again? Check out some different shops for a fresh overview of fashions.
- Take a look at your wardrobe. Make sure that you can clearly define which outfits are casual, smart casual, evening and work. Try to avoid wearing bits of your work clothes, for example, your suit jacket, at the weekend. Forget about the office until Monday.
