Slow Cooker
10 January 2007
It's very easy to comfort ourselves in the winter with lots of starchy and rich convenience foods. The mornings are dark, the late afternoons are dreary and the nights are cold - so we bundle up in unflattering clothes and engorge our poor livers - no wonder we get depressed and lazy. I love my slow-cooker because it takes just a little bit of effort in the morning when I'm at my best, to chop a few carrots, onions, courgettes, new potatoes and other veggies (even frozen ones will work - just throw them in as they are) with some pieces of beef, chicken, strips of pork, dare I say - turkey! (Very low in fat), or for vegetarian variety - brown or basmati rice and lentils or tinned beans or chickpeas. Be sure to add stock cubes free from hydrogenated fat, and garlic. The aroma at the end of the day is divine, and satisfying to the most robust of taste buds. Don't forget to switch it on before you leave the house!
